AIDS in Swinging
It's hard to report much on what is not happening, but there are no cases I am aware of where HIV was transferred directly in the swing community. One case involved two clubs in Minnesota in the 1980's where most of the regulars agreed to be tested. Of about 200 people tested, two were found to be HIV+. The two positives were women who were engaging in anal sex with an HIV+ male from another city who was not a club member. They did not have sex with him at the club. He was known to be bisexual. This was early in the learning process about AIDS.
In 1986 the CDC published a report about 58 people in a swing club and how NONE of the members had contracted AIDS/HIV from two women that had tested HIV+. These women had slept with EVERYONE in the group and didn't transmit HIV
Several years ago, there was a study of HIV among members of La Trapeze, which is located in one of the highest AIDS risk areas in the U.S. - New York. Among the 500 tested, there was NO HIV+ results.
Swinging may be falsely blamed for a couples death simply because they lived most of the year at a nudist camp with a reputation for a swinging atmosphere. The couple were in their late 60's and were not active in swinging. The man was known to be active in the gay scene around New York and elsewhere. The woman, who traveled the world, had a rotation of young Jamaican men who she brought to the camp and entertained. She was quite possessive of these young men, and they were not allowed by her to fraternize with other women at the camp. Their adult son, who was gay, also had AIDS. The couple both died of AIDS. It is impossible to speculate about the order in which these people contracted AIDS, or by what method, or from what source(s). But this hardly seems related to swinging.
In practice most lifestylers demand condoms while some don't, yet there are hardly any known cases of STD's, much less HIV.
If AIDS could be effectively transmitted man-woman-man through intercourse, the entire swinging community would be riddled with it and it would have paralleled the spread in the gay community. That, of course, hasn't occurred and there is increasing evidence that it's very difficult for a woman to get it from a man and virtually impossible for a healthy heterosexual male to get it sexually from a woman.
